Gemeente Registration: The Document Every Newcomer Needs
Anyone moving to the Netherlands — for work, study, or family — registers with their municipality, and the gemeente will not complete registration in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) on the strength of an ordinary Canadian certificate. It expects the birth certificate, and where relevant the marriage certificate, to carry an apostille. Couples and families need a certificate for each person being registered.

The Route: Apostille, Not Consular Legalization
The Netherlands is an Apostille Convention member, and since Canada joined the Convention on 11 January 2024, Canadian public documents for the Netherlands need only an apostille — issued by the province's designated authority for provincial and notarized documents, or by Global Affairs Canada for federal documents such as RCMP checks. No legalization at a Dutch mission is involved.
Dutch-issued documents flow the other way: they are apostilled in the Netherlands, typically through the Dutch courts, and cannot be certified by Canadian authorities. Where a file mixes both, we complete the Canadian side and identify the Dutch channel for the rest.

Translation: English Often Works, but Confirm

Practice can still vary by municipality and by receiving institution, and a document in another language, or a complex notarized instrument, may need a sworn Dutch translation.
