Apostille New Brunswick — Document Legalization & Authentication

New Brunswick has not designated its own competent authority under the Apostille Convention. Documents issued in the province — vital records, court documents, notarized paperwork — are apostilled or authenticated by Global Affairs Canada, the same federal office that handles RCMP criminal record checks and other federally issued documents.

For New Brunswickers this means one destination for the whole file, but also that every file travels to Ottawa. Since Canada's accession took effect on 11 January 2024, the apostille has been available for Convention member destinations, while non-member countries still require the older authentication-plus-legalization chain.

New Brunswick's official bilingualism has a practical payoff in legalization. Provincial documents may be issued in English or French, and Acadian families dealing with francophone destinations — France in particular, a Convention member — can often use French-language documents without any translation step. Documents headed to anglophone or other destinations may need certified translation, and we flag that requirement before the apostille is ordered so the sequence is right.

The province's caseload reflects its people: Acadian families with civil-status and inheritance ties to France; university graduates from UNB, Mount Allison, and Université de Moncton carrying credentials abroad; health-care and trades professionals recruited internationally in both directions; and exporters in forestry, seafood, and manufacturing certifying commercial documents for foreign buyers.

Official birth, marriage, and death certificates are ordered through Service New Brunswick, which administers the province's vital statistics. An official certificate — in either official language — is what the process requires; photocopies do not qualify.

Documents without a government seal are notarized first by a New Brunswick notary public or lawyer, or sworn before a commissioner of oaths: diploma copies, employment letters, consent letters, statutory declarations, and corporate records all pass through this step before Global Affairs Canada will certify them.

The destination decides. Convention members — France, the United States, most of Europe and Latin America — take the apostille from Global Affairs Canada. Non-members such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait require authentication followed by consular legalization at their embassy or consulate.

Because embassies each set their own submission rules, and none are located in New Brunswick, the legalization leg is always coordinated at a distance — which changes nothing about the outcome when the file is sequenced correctly from the start.
